Friend. Helper. Coach. Advocate. Doula. The word "doula" comes from the ancient Greek meaning "a woman who serves" and is now used to refer to a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth; or who provides emotional and practical support during the postpartum period. One question I am often asked is "What is your role when the spouse is active in supporting their wife?" Not only is this a very popular question, but it is also a topic I take very personally and seriously. When each of my children were born, I purposely had a "doula" attend (minus one birth because it was so darn fast!). My husband was more than competent to support me physically and emotionally - but I knew he would struggle to be objective when the going got tough for me. I know me best. I knew I needed someone to push me even when I wanted to give up. My doula in each birth did something different to help enhance and encourage my birth experience. The one thing that remained the same was that she served me. Whatever I needed, whatever my husband needed to help support me - she was there. That made me feel so much closer to my husband through the process because he could be the pillar of strength I needed him to be. My goal as a doula is to live up to my name - to be a woman who serves. Here are some of the ways I have served women as their doula:
The coolest thing about being a doula is that I get to come along side mom and dad and bring encouragement, education, support and love to one of their greatest moments as a couple. I refuse to ever be in the way or take over a birth. My job is to serve and support your goals and hopes for the birth you desire to have. My hope for you as you search through my site, is that you would feel the passion I have to serve pregnant women and their families. Would you allow me the opportunity to meet with you and build a wonderful plan together for your future birth? It would be my privilege.
